What is Coaching?

As your coach, my job is to help you identify the blocks that are getting in your way. I can help you identify the root cause of why your behaviors and your goals aren’t lining up. Perhaps you’re struggling with goals you’re deeply committed to but haven’t had much progress—especially sustained progress—in achieving, and you can’t figure out why. My approach is to coach you, not your situation, so you can figure out what’s holding you back and your best options for moving forward.

That’s why we will work together to make lasting change: our partnership is tailored to you, your unique circumstances, life history, experiences, outlook, and the inimitable talents, gifts, and potential only you possess. Why would you try to follow someone else’s path when yours is the only one of its kind?

You are different, exceptional, and special in your own way. You have strengths, talents, challenges, and beliefs that are distinctive to you individually, and all of those need to play a role in how you live your life, your way. You are irreplaceable.

What coaching is not:

It’s not therapy. Therapists are wonderful resources with specific training to help you deal with and understand your history and your past, and help you heal. They are licensed mental health professionals who can diagnose and treat mental health conditions. They can help you explore the past so you can better understand the present, often by helping you figure out the “why.”

In contrast, the focus in coaching is the present and moving into the future through helping you find solutions that work for you. My purpose in coaching is to help you improve in whatever areas of life you choose. Perhaps those are areas that are causing you challenges or where you are not showing up in a way that aligns with your values. Coaches are best suited to help functioning individuals go from ordinary to extraordinary.

It’s not mentoring or consulting. I’m not going to tell you what to do or how to do it. The world is full of people telling you if you just do this one thing, your life will be magical. If you just buy this product, you’ll achieve your goals. If you just do this my way, you will achieve success. How well has this worked, for anyone really? It doesn’t, and that’s because what works for one person doesn’t usually work for another. And why would it?

There are no magical solutions sitting on a shelf that work for everybody. I’m not going to sell you something, and I’m not going to tell you to do it my way. I don’t believe in cookie-cutter approaches. I do believe you are the best keeper of the solutions that will work for you, and together we will uncover them. Then, I will help you implement those tailored solutions that work for you and you alone.

It’s also not a friendship. Sounds a little harsh, doesn’t it? But friends are biased, and as your coach, I can best help you by remaining impartial. Always.

That doesn’t mean, however, that I won’t offer you empathy, or that I’m going to tell you you’re wrong. Quite the opposite, actually. Everything you do makes total sense given your past experiences, your feelings, and the way you see the world. It’s whether what you’re doing is getting you the outcome you want that is the real question.

A Word About Trust:

I am a trained professional that you can trust to really hear you, see you, and help you pursue your best self, whatever that means for YOU. Your trust is critical to our relationship, but I don’t ask for blind trust. Instead, my intention is to earn the trust you place in me by remaining non-judgmental and truly hearing you and your perspective, and then helping you find your best answers.

When was the last time you felt truly heard? Truly seen? For all that is you and your unique special sauce in this world? That’s my focus: You. Not me. Not my agenda. Not my preferred outcome. You and what you want are my focus. When you begin to trust that, our work will take off.

What you can expect from coaching:

Coaching can take you from good to great. It’s about moving you toward accomplishing the goals that drive you. It can help you change patterns and behaviors that are not serving you well by examining what’s motivating those behaviors and finding solutions that work for YOU.

As your coach, I’ll be your partner and your ally. I’ll support you, help you figure out what matters to you most and what’s getting in your way, and together we will create a path that leads you to living your best life.
